Having introduced Cornwall’s first female-only team, Bodmin coach Paul Couch hopes to continue to lead the emergence of touch rugby within the South West.

Couch, already involved with the club’s youth section, was approached three years ago this September to see if he would be interested in lending his skills to the development of a new ladies team.

On a cold wet night, 12 ladies turned up to Bodmin’s first-ever session at Clifden Park. Today there are more than 30 players involved and, at present, the club is the only ladies touch team in the Duchy. Playing under O2 rules, they train every Monday night from 7.00 pm until roughly 8.30 pm using the core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship (TREADS).

“Anyone is welcome and if they are interested in joining they can privately message us,” Couch told the Voice. “Somebody will message them back without a doubt. We probably get a new player every two weeks and anybody is more than welcome to come along. We have players from the age of 16 up to 53.

“There is another club down at Truro called the Trojans and they are a mixed team. Falmouth have introduced touch down there as well and are predominantly mixed. We have just played them in our first tournament, held on Friday, April 30 in Falmouth. It was fantastic.

“I took nine ladies and we played mixed teams, losing our three games but we did not get played off the park. We held our own and as a coach I was over the moon. We played Truro and another side that were mainly made up of players from Falmouth.

“Overall there were probably 80 to 90 players there. That was our first competition. Truro, Falmouth and ourselves really want to promote touch in the South West. One way to do this is to hold a mini-tournament once a month. The next tournament will be on a Friday night either at Truro or in Bodmin. I would like to get it at Bodmin because we are the only ladies team.”

Bodmin Ladies will continue training throughout the summer. For more information, including details on how you can get involved, see their Facebook page or search Bodmin Ladies Touch Rugby on Instagram.
