Ian Woosnam OBE, 1991 Masters champion and Europe’s 2006 Ryder Cup winning captain, has been announced as returning host of the European Legends Links 2021 Championship at Trevose Golf and Country Club.

The golfing Hall of Famer, who spent 50 consecutive weeks as world number one, is among a star-studded playing line-up that promises to mark a spectacular return for golfing competition on UK soil. The European Legends Links Championship, which will be held at Trevose between June 17-20, will see world-renowned golfers battling it out for first place and a €50,000 prize, as well as giving amateur golfers a chance to showcase their skills on world-famous grounds.

With the covid-19 pandemic having a huge impact on the sporting industry, the recently renamed Legends Tour is among the first to set the stage for guests to see their sporting heroes in the flesh.

Woosnam, who was the first Welshman to win a major championship and earn his green jacket at the Masters, believes there’s life yet for the sport as we emerge from the pandemic: “I’m sure everybody’s going to be excited to get out and be playing. You can just imagine the great sense of anticipation, the sheer energy that will be running through the player’s veins as they take to the course.

“Not just me, but the amateurs, the pros, everybody in attendance. I can’t wait to get out there and take it all in.”

Continuing, Woosnam expressed his delight at once again hosting and playing in this prestigious event: “To compete against such talented individuals in a breathtaking location is truly an honour for me and, with the success of the previous event in 2019, I’m confident this tournament will be one to remember.”

Joining Woosnam in the competition are 1999 Open champion, Paul Lawrie OBE, Ryder Cup star Peter Baker and British Masters champion Barry Lane, offering spectators and golf fanatics a star-studded experience in a competitive atmosphere.

Furthermore, amateur golfers will be presented with the opportunity to play alongside their golfing idols, with the Pro-Am team event kicking off proceedings on Thursday, June 17.

John Hayes, CEO of event organisers Champions (UK) plc, said: “As one of the biggest names in golf, I can’t think of a better host for this year’s event.

“Now more than ever, we need a big personality to support the return of the sport and we’re thrilled to see someone of Ian’s stature backing what I believe will be an event to go down in history.”

Throughout the Championship there will be plenty of opportunities to raise money for charity with Lord’s Taverners, the UK’s leading sports disability charity.
