Teenager takes on cycling challenge for hospital staff

Matt Dixon

A teenage girl is cycling eight miles for 40 consecutive days to raise money for NHS staff at Treliske Hospital.

Angelina Hinsley, aged 14, has been inspired by the late Captain Sir Tom Moore, who raised a staggering £30m with his garden walks during the first lockdown last year.

Mum Debbie said: “She’s amazing really. She watched a lot of Sir Tom Moore on the TV and decided that she wanted to do something to help.

“One evening she said, ‘I know what I’m going to do – I’m going to ride my bike eight miles a day for 40 days.’”

Angelina, who lives in Mitchell, began her daily circuit to Summercourt before she had gone back to school at Newquay Tretherras – but she has carried on her cycling despite having less time.

She has now passed 30 consecutive days and Debbie said she is already talking about doing it for 50 days to raise more funds for hospital staff.

Debbie added: “She’s so thoughtful – she wants to give the money to staff so they can treat themselves to a spa day as a thank you for everything they’ve done.

“She’s done every day with a smile on her face. She’s come back drowned some days but she just comes home from the school the next day, gets changed and goes out again.”

Cycling is not Angelina’s only money-making endeavour.

After watching TV programme The Great British Sewing Bee she asked Debbie if she could have a sewing machine.

Having taught herself to sew, she started making – amongst other things – face masks, bunting, cushions and draw string bags.

“One evening we put a tartan face mask on an online market place and she had more than 70 orders in no time, with some people requesting different tartans. She was absolutely thrilled,” Debbie said.

Angelina’s unstinting efforts have inspired her eight-year-old sister Seren, who wants to do 10,000 steps for charity.

Anyone wanting to donate to Angelina’s ongoing bike rides for NHS staff can visit the JustGiving website and search Angelina Hinsley.

Her page simply reads: “My name is Angelina and I am going to cycle eight miles every day for 40 days to raise £1,000 so I can buy spa days for all coronavirus doctors and nurses at Treliske Hospital in Truro.

“They have done a lot for us and I just want to give something back. I will cycle every day until March 31.”
